Welcome to St. Beghs Catholic Junior School

Year 4 Comenius Project Work

We would like to share with you some of the wonderful work we've been doing for the Comenius project.  We hope you enjoy looking at it!

In February 2006, Jamie Reed,
our local Member of Parliament, visited our Year 3 & 4 pupils
to talk about his job and his
vision for the future of Whitehaven.

Here he is pictured with a pupil.

This map was drawn by a Year 4 pupil.  It shows their journey to school.  We think it's GREAT!!!!

Year 4 pupils have been looking at transport systems in and around Whitehaven.  We've looked in detail at the Sea to Sea (C2C) cycle track which begins at Whitehaven harbour.  We've made huge maps showing the cycle route across Cumbria and enjoyed finding out about lots of tourist attractions along the way.  Here is one of our maps.

Whitehaven is a Georgian town and has a very interesting history.  In the past coal mining was very important and the harbour was a busy place, shipping coal to other places.  Tourism is very important in Whitehaven today.  People like to visit the town to find out about its fascinating past.  The harbour is now a tourist attraction with its marina.

Here are some more carefully drawn pictures of the harbour.  The round pictures are 'Whitehaven plate' designs.

A Poem about Whitehaven

By Miss Savage's Class

Whitehaven, what a place to spend the day,

Better get there without delay.

From the beautiful harbour with fantastic lights,

To the flower covered gardens and wonderful sights.

There's loads to do and places to go,

From the  Beacon to the Rum Story, there's lots to know.

It's the start of the C2C,

An exciting journey that's totally free!

Go to Haig museum to learn about the pit,

Or how about the Sports Centre if you want to get fit!!

But if entertainment, fun and eating are your cup of tea,

There's the Civic hall and Rosehill and chips by the sea.

What a place to be for a day,

I might need to come back for a longer stay.

Come to sunny Whitehaven!
