Welcome to St. Begh's Catholic Junior School

Dear Parents

As part of our Healthy Schools work we encourage children to make healthy choices and to be aware of what makes a balanced diet.  This is done partly through the curriculum but also through our food in school policy.  You may be aware that we have been part of a pilot scheme to test the new Nutritional Standards for school meals.  This means that we are trying out lots of recipes to find tasty, nutritional meals that meet those standards for children who have school meals.  As part of this project, and in order to avoid waste, we will be sending home a weekly menu for your child to choose what they would like for lunch each day.  This will be a good opportunity for you to see what we have on offer and to talk to your children about their food choices.  The menus need to be returned to school on a Monday morning.

We would also like to find ways to encourage children on packed lunches to think about their food choices.  The following are things to think about when putting together your child’s lunch:

Have you included …….

  • A good portion of starchy food (e.g. bread, pasta, pitta, rice)

  • Fruit and vegetables (e.g. apple, Satsuma, cherry tomatoes, carrots, raisins)

  • A portion of dairy food (e.g. cheese, yoghurt)

  • A portion of lean meat, fish or vegetarian alternative (e.g. ham, chicken, tuna, egg, hummus)

  • A drink (e.g. fruit juice, milk, bottled water)

It has also come to our attention that there is an awful lot of waste food and packaging from packed lunches.  So that you can see what you children are eating (or not) we will be asking children to take home anything they do not eat.

In our continuing efforts to improve lunch times for the children we are looking for ways to create a pleasant atmosphere for eating.  We would like to talk to your children about what they think would help to improve things and to bring their ideas into school to share with us.  Examples might be background music playing or colourful, wipe-clean tablecloths.  We look forward to your suggestions.

Yours sincerely
